What is this free workshop and how do I apply?
Join us for a FREE, in-person, 1.5-day workshop tailored to smaller, higher-ed institutions in the southwestern region (New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas, and Utah), as well as surrounding states, working to strengthen their research IT (“cyberinfrastructure”) capacity—computing, data storage, network capabilities, training, and campus expertise. Designed for IT and campus leaders, grant administrators, librarians, faculty, and other researchers, this workshop will introduce you to low- or no-cost federally funded cyberinfrastructure resources available today and highlight funding pathways to advance your campus IT capabilities for research and academic programs.
You are eligible to apply if your small institution is located in the following states:
New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas, and Utah
Agenda Highlights
- Day 1: CI 101, funding overviews, case studies, identifying campus education and STEM science drivers, and an interactive group exercise
- Evening: Informal networking reception and breakout discussions
- Day 2: Campus CI plans and additional hands-on sessions based on participant interests.
We are accepting applications on a rolling basis. Once your application is accepted, you will be sent a separate link to an official registration form.

By attending this FREE workshop. You will:
- Learn why “cyberinfrastructure” applies to your campus’s strategic priorities, research, and the teaching of research methods, including data science and AI
- Understand the landscape and use cases for using low-cost or no-cost federally funded resources available now to support your researchers, educators, and students
- Explore funding sources to enhance your campus research IT capabilities
- Meet and learn from other smaller institutions in your region about common challenges and strategies for enhancing research IT

Is there travel support to attend this free workshop?
Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), travel assistance is available for up to 40 participants on a first-come, first-served basis.
In-State Participants (New Mexico)
Participants traveling from within New Mexico (based on campus location) are eligible for:
- Lodging reimbursement: Up to two nights at the workshop hotel, not to exceed $189 per night plus applicable taxes
- Travel stipend: $150 to help offset mileage, meals, and local transportation
Maximum support per participant: Up to $600
Out-of-State Participants
Participants traveling from outside New Mexico (based on campus location) are eligible for:
- Lodging reimbursement: Up to two nights at the workshop hotel, not to exceed $189 per night plus applicable taxes
- Airfare reimbursement: Up to $500
- Travel stipend: $150 to help offset ground transportation and incidental expenses
Maximum support per participant: Up to $1,100
Additional Information
- Travel support is limited to two participants per institution.
- Assistance is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until available funds are exhausted.
- Participants will be asked during registration whether they wish to request travel support.
- To process payments, we will collect your name, mailing address, email address, and mobile phone number.
- Participants must attend both days of the workshop to receive travel support.
- Reimbursements and stipends will be issued by check after the workshop and mailed to the address provided during registration.
Note: Travel costs for Tribal College and University (TCU) participants will be covered by the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC). For TCU participants, Quilt will coordinate with AIHEC regarding your participation in the workshop.

If you are a no-show for your first night, you will be charged for your room and run the risk of not having a room if the hotel is sold out. You are responsible for canceling your reservation if you are not able to make the meeting.
