Network Engineer #653

This position will work with the Network Operations team to maintain a highly available statewide network. Key responsibilities include monitoring and troubleshooting connectivity for institutions connected to the NCREN IP/MPLS network. The positions track directly to the mission of providing advanced networking services to North Carolina’s K-20 community.

The position includes a rotating on-call requirement. Travel to NCREN sites and institutions are required. This position, at times, may require working outside of normal business hours.

Reporting to the VoIP Manager as part of the VoIP team, the VoIP Engineer provides design, deployment and operational support for CENIC's VoIP services, which uses infrastructure owned and managed by CENIC. The VoIP Engineer serves as a technical expert on the VoIP team and supports external customers, as well as internal staff. In addition, the VoIP Engineer may be called upon to represent CENIC in technical forums, such as meetings, panel presentations, and conferences.

Reporting to the Director of Technical Operations, the Core Network Engineering team provides high-level architecture, design, installation and operational support for the networks and infrastructure owned and/or managed by CENIC. The Core Network Engineers lend technical expertise to internal staff and external customers, and serve as official representatives of CENIC in technical forums, such as meetings, panel discussions, and conference presentations.

As a Network Engineer, you will be a key part of the support system ensuring the delivery of Internet connectivity for more than 10 million end-users across the global Research and Education community. You will be responsible for the smooth operation of a complex global production network, ensuring it is always available and performing well. You will be at the event horizon of high-severity network impacts, requiring excellent troubleshooting, communication, and network management skills to expedite problem resolution and act as a key point of contact between internal groups, vendors, and network peers. FHCRC Network Architect

The Network Architect is responsible for the design, architecture, and oversight of a holistic and consistent voice and data network in a campus environment (~8000 active Ethernet ports) including: switches, routers, firewalls, wireless, and VoIP systems. Design and implement long-term strategic goals and short-term tactical plans for managing and maintaining the transport network. Consult with end-users, clients, peers, and/or management to define business requirements for complex systems and network infrastructure development. Develop, document, and communicate plans for deployment solutions, including: analysis of cost reduction and technical advancement opportunities. Provide third-tier support to integrated network/voice operational support team.
