The face-to-face Quilt StateNets Financial Focus Group (“FFG”) meeting provides an opportunity for fellow members to connect and discuss topics that are relevant to managing a robust financial division. The group was formed with the purpose of capturing and maintaining a set of business metrics that serve as a benchmark across our member organizations. Comprised of Business Managers and CFOs, the FFG has evolved into a dynamic national group and an invaluable resource of knowledge sharing, best practices and financial transparency.

Quilt Peer Review (QPR) Breakfast

The QPR breakfast will be a how-to briefing on the new QPR assessment tool in development over the last 12 months by a team of Quilt members. The tool is designed to be used as part of the formal QPR process or as a stand-alone assessment to guide operational or strategic planning for Quilt members. Focusing on 9 essential organizational elements of research and education networks, it is a resource that aids in the gathering of input from advisors, community stakeholders or staff – or all of them.

Invited Address: N-Wave in Action

The success of N-Wave as a tool for NOAA scientists is dependent on the partnerships and long-term relationships between NOAA and the R&E community. NOAA will share an update on N-Wave and we will hear a presentation from Paul Schultz of NOAA’s Earth System Resource Laboratory about how NOAA’s weather forecast models rely on the high-performance infrastructure of N-Wave.

Panel Discussion: Quilt Members and Software Defined Networking

One of the missions of the R&E community is to engage with its many partners, including industry, to design, develop and support experimental, leading-edge technologies in order to drive advancements in academic networking and research. One aspect of Quilt member involvement in software defined networking is the regional deployments of OpenFlow-enabled infrastructure. Representatives from these regional network deployments will share their interests, goals and experiences thus far with deploying OpenFlow in their networking infrastructure.

An update on The Quilt’s recent OpenFlow Request for Proposal initiative will also be provided.

Panel Discussion: 100G-Capable R&E Infrastructure

At The Quilt’s 2011 Fall Member Meeting, our 100G working group presented on the drivers for 100G capability as well as on the different realms of 100G such as optical, Ethernet, routing, and other considerations. At that time, the 100G working group was setting its sights on the 100G demos at SC11. A year later, working group members will share their experiences and discoveries with the technology in the last year. Through a panel discussion we will learn about additional Quilt member plans to deploy 100G networks in the next 12 months, understanding the drivers for these next deployments and the goals each organization aims to achieve with the new infrastructure.

Invited Address: Emerging Technologies, Trends and Challenges Impacting Teaching and Learning for K-12 and Implications for R&E Networks

The 2012 Horizon Report for K-12 discusses the top emerging technologies, trends and challenges that leaders in educational technology believe will have the greatest impact on K-12 education in the next 5 years. Keith Krueger, CEO of the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), a collaborator on the Horizon Report, will provide an overview of the Report as well as share his insights on what areas of the Report have the greatest significance for Quilt members’ role in serving K-12 institutions.

Invited Address: Michigan’s Cyber Range Managed by Merit

Merit Network is creating a cyber range in conjunction with its membership that will act as a live test bed for critical cyber security research and innovation. The Michigan Cyber Range is a partnership between entities at the state and federal level, the private sector and Michigan's educational community. With a preliminary design in place, Don Welch, president and CEO of Merit, will provide an overview of the cyber range and describe how this effort fits into Merit’s overall research and development strategy.
